Who We Are
Main Street United Methodist Church was founded in 1883. Our historic place of worship dates from 1907, and has served as a place of vital spiritual nourishment ever since. Because of the foundation laid down by generations of faithful disciples the rotts of our church run deep. Yet the strength of Main Street remains its wonderful blend of young and old, traditional and modern. All share a love for Jesus Christ and a desire to grow in spiritual maturity and servant discipleship.

The heart of everything we do at Main Street is a committment to Christ- centered worship and Biblical teaching. One of the unique and exciting characteristics of our community is the experience of two distinct styles of worship.
The Fellowship Service provides a modern expression of worship inspired by the ancient practices of the early church described in Acts 2. The style of music and the use of technology brand this service as modern, but the roots sink deeply into United Methodist theology.
The Sanctuary Service, set in one of the most beautiful sanctuaries imaginable, is a creative experience of traditional liturgical worship with lively participation in our rich heritage of hymns, creeds and responsive prayers. We celebrate a diversity of musical styles led by several dedicated choirs and ensembles, including two hand bell groups.

Over the years, the leaders of our church have renewed a commitment to stay in downtown Hattiesburg and to remain connected with our community in Servant Discipleship. For thirty- five years Main Street has sponsored and developed Aldersgate Mission, a life- changing ministry with children and families in the neardy Briarfield community. Currently we are planning a significant expansion of our space and ministry at Aldersgate. In addition, we have members who work tirelessly with other servant ministries, like Edwards Street Fellowship, Scoutreach, Habitat for Humanity, Small Miracles Child Development, and BreadBasket to name a few. And yet, despite all these ministries, we have a growing desire to do more, and ongoing conversation continues around this area.

One challenge of a downtown church where persons drive from all parts of the city and even from surrounding towns is the development of on- going and life- giving relationships in Christian community. A significant part of our response to this challenge will be the continued development of strong ministries for our growing numbers of children and youth. In addition, we recently launched and will continue to promote a variety of lay- led small group opportunities, all of which include elements of bible study, prayer, and service. Along with our excellent Sunday School classes and Wednesday night fellowship time, these groups will provide new avenues for sharing our lives with one another as we grow in spiritual maturity.
